Skill Level: Beginner
Ages: 18+
Location: MakerSpace (located upstairs; no a/c in the main room, but adjacent classroom available to cool down)
In this workshop we will learn how to turn different salvage materials like pallet wood and rough-sawn lumber into wood that is ready to use in your project. We will go over the basics of selecting your salvaged wood and estimating material amounts as well as safety issues such as how to avoid lead paint and nail removal. We will also talk about and practice techniques to straighten out curved and bent wood to achieve square sides and flat surfaces so that you can incorporate unique lumber into your projects.
Tools include the table saw to rip and square pieces as well as how to use a table saw in replacement of a jointer. We will use a thickness planer to plane the wood down to desired dimensions and achieve flatness, as well as discussing the techniques of planing things down that will not fit into the the electric planer such as handheld planers. We will also be using the band saw to address similar issues with wood with irregular dimensions and to resaw large pieces of lumber.
